This week we are going to explore addition. There are a number of key words which will you need to know and use throughout this week.
add combine total group altogether
Monday
Today you will need to draw a part whole model like the one below. You will be using this model to support you when you are combining two groups to find the whole (total). You will need to find a range of small objects which you can use to combine together. You could even create your own counters, colour them in, cut them out and use these! You could explore placing a range of amounts into the different parts and combining these to make the whole. You could begin with combining amounts to make 10, once you are confident in doing this you could combine amounts to make 10 and above.
Tuesday
Today we are going to explore a story to help us with our combining skills today! Click on the link to watch the story of Mr Gumpy's Outing
Once you have watched the story we would like you to create your own boat! You could make your boat from play-dough, cardboard or egg cartons!
Now we are going to create our own stories using the sentence stems First.... Then.... Now...
First there were 2 children in the boat. Then 2 more jumped in. Now there were 4 children in the boat. You could even write the story down with the help of your grown up! You could even make little people to jump in and out of your boat! We can't wait to see your super creations! Don't forget you can use your part whole model to support you in finding the whole!
Wednesday
Today we are going to use the part whole model to support us when writing a number sentence! Below is an example of my completed part whole model. 3 is a part, 3 is a part, the whole is 6. Can you make your part whole model look like mine? Now we are going to explore writing this as a number sentence. 3 + 3 = 6
Can you see how we add the two parts together using the addition + sign to find the total?
Once you have had a try at mine can you create your own part whole model and number sentences for the ones below.
4 is a part
3 is a part
the whole is ________
_______ + _______ =
5 is a part
4 is a part
the whole is _________
________+_________=
Thursday
Today you will need to ask your grown up to help you read your addition story! You will need your part whole model to help you!
Miss Hanson has 6 cookies and Miss Wilcox has 3 how many cookies do they have altogether?
You could draw your cookies in your part whole model to help you find the total. Don't forget your number sentence (______+______=)
Challenge:
Miss Hanson and Miss Wilcox have lost their brilliant brains. They need your help this morning! They both think they have 10 cookies each in their baskets.
Miss Wilcox has 6 cookies in one basket and 3 in the other.
Miss Hanson has 6 cookies in one basket and 4 in the other.
How many cookies do they have each? Who was right?
Can you show this using the part whole model and the number sentences as above?
Fun Friday!
