Maths Challenges!
This week we are going to explore addition. There are a number of key words which will you need to know and use throughout this week.
add    combine    total    group    altogether

Monday
Today you will need to draw a part whole model like the one below. You will be using this model to support you when you are combining two groups to find the whole (total). You will need to find a range of small objects which you can use to combine together. You could even create your own counters, colour them in, cut them out and use these! You could explore placing a range of amounts into the different parts and combining these to make the whole. You could begin with combining amounts to make 10, once you are confident in doing this you could combine amounts to make 10 and above.

Tuesday
Today we are going to explore a story to help us with our combining skills today! Click on the link to watch the story of Mr Gumpy's Outing

Once you have watched the story we would like you to create your own boat! You could make your boat from play-dough, cardboard or egg cartons!
Mayflower Boat Egg Carton Craft: Kids Summer Day Activity Idea ...

Now we are going to create our own stories using the sentence stems First.... Then.... Now...
First there were 2 children in the boat. Then 2 more jumped in. Now there were 4 children in the boat. You could even write the story down with the help of your grown up! You could even make little people to jump in and out of your boat! We can't wait to see your super creations! Don't forget you can use your part whole model to support you in finding the whole!

Wednesday
Today we are going to use the part whole model to support us when writing a number sentence! Below is an example of my completed part whole model. 3 is a part, 3 is a part, the whole is 6. Can you make your part whole model look like mine? Now we are going to explore writing this as a number sentence. 3 + 3 = 6
Can you see how we add the two parts together using the addition + sign to find the total?

Once you have had a try at mine can you create your own part whole model and number sentences for the ones below.
4 is a part
3 is a part
the whole is ________
_______ +  _______ =

5 is a part
4 is a part
the whole is _________
________+_________=

Thursday
Today you will need to ask your grown up to help you read your addition story! You will need your part whole model to help you!

Miss Hanson has 6 cookies and Miss Wilcox has 3 how many cookies do they have altogether?
You could draw your cookies in your part whole model to help you find the total. Don't forget your number sentence (______+______=)

Challenge:

Miss Hanson and Miss Wilcox have lost their brilliant brains. They need your help this morning! They both think they have 10 cookies each in their baskets.
Miss Wilcox has 6 cookies in one basket and 3 in the other.
Miss Hanson has 6 cookies in one basket and 4 in the other.
How many cookies do they have each? Who was right?
Can you show this using the part whole model and the number sentences as above?

Understanding the World
This week we are going to look at one of our favourite stories Jasper's Beanstalk!
Click on the link below to listen to this story!

Jasper's Beanstalk: Amazon.co.uk: Butterworth, Nick, Inkpen, Mick ...

Monday
Today we are going to explore reading the story Jasper's Beanstalk. Before you begin the story, have a look at the front cover and discuss these questions with your grown ups.
What can you see? What do you think will happen? Who is Jasper? Do you know any other stories which contain a beanstalk? Why does the cat have tools?
Once you have read the story you could plant your own beans or seeds if you have any! If you do not have any you could research all of the things you would need to grow your own beanstalk! Can you make a list of all of the things you need? Can you draw the pictures to match?

Tuesday
Today we are going to continue to explore growing! We are going to focus on the different parts of a plant! Using any resources you may have at home your challenge is to create a picture of a plant! Here is an example of a picture using the key words and parts that you will need to include! Once you have designed your plant/flower can you label the different parts using your phonic knowledge? You could even write a super sentence about your design!

Parts Of A Flower Craft -

Wednesday
Today we are going on a nature walk! We are going to collect lots of natural resources! You could walk to the local woods if you have one nearby to see what you can find! Whilst there you could discuss with your grown up's the changes you can see and the things which are different! Are the leaves nice and green or are they brown like in Autumn? You could attach sticky tape to a sheet of paper to stick your treasures onto! Just like below. Once you are home you could research the different tress you passed and the different leaves you found! Keep your treasures safe as you will need these for tomorrow's learning!

Fun Friday

This week for fun Friday we would like you to be very creative. In school the key worker children have been learning about the famous painting 'Sunflowers' by Van Gogh.

We would like you to create your own version of this picture. You could use cut and stick resources, paints, playdough or natural objects from outside. We can't wait to see your wonderful creations!

We would also love to hear about and see any pictures if you are growing your very own sunflowers at home!!

week 12 maths

Maths

This week we are going to be learning to subtract number this week.

Key vocabulary :

Take away, less , subtract , equal , how may left over?

Monday

Today we are going to be using a song to support our simple subtraction. Do you know 5 little speckled frogs? there's a great link for it here

Sing the song with your grown up and use your hand to represent the 5 frogs. Each time a frog jumps off of the log put down 1 finger.

Sing the song again with out the video clip. Begin to talk about: how many frog are on the log?
How many frogs jumped off of the log ?
How many frogs are left over.

Children should have a good knowledge of counting back from 5 in their head and knowing the answer. If children need support you can encourage them to count their fingers.

Extend to using vocabulary 'take away'.

Tuesday

Today we will be continuing to use 5 little speckled frogs to support us beginning to write simple subtractions.

You will need your own 5 frogs and a log. You could draw these and cut them out.

In school we would use a mini script to support children understanding subtraction. We can it a subtraction story, it looks like this.

There were____ frogs sitting on the log
then ___ frog jumped off
Now there are ____ frogs on the log

We would use this model to talk through each stage of the rhyme. Say the story to the children and encourage them to use their frog puppets to support while they fill in the missing numbers . It would be great to encourage them to write this down (to support number formation)

Challenge : to begin to write the simple number sentences using the story to help.

show the children the - sign and explain that this means were taking something away. We write a number sentence as we would write a normal sentence. We write it in order as we say it. eg there were 5 frogs on the log, 1 jumped off (we need to take away/ subtract one) and there were 4 left on the log (equals 4)

5-1=4

repeat for each frog jumping off

Wednesday
Today we are going to to be exploring subtraction from a higher amount of 10, using the same concept of taking away 1 each time. The song we are using today is '10 in the bed' . You will need to collect 10 of your favourite teddies of characters.

You could put them all in your bed and sing the song or you could find a blanket and me them a bed. As we did with the frogs we are going to sing the song and take out a bear each time. Talk about how many we have , how many role out each time, how many are left over.

Children may not be as confident reciting numbers from 10 in their mind, you could write down a number line of 1-10 to visually support them. Remind children that we have taken a bear away so we need to count backwards.
Use the subtraction story from yesterday

There were____ bears in the bed
then ___ bear rolled out
Now there are ____ bears in the bed

Challenge: re-cap writing number sentences from yesterday. Encourage children to have a go at writing their own for the rest of the song.

Thursday
Today we were going to be learning to subtract numbers greater than 1. We will be playing 'playdough squash' . Here is a great recipe you can use. (if you don't have ingredients to make play dough you could use some thing edible instead eg cheerios - which could be eaten to subtract)

You will need to write some simple subtraction sums onto some card for the children to use. First use 5-4 =
Talk through the number sentence with the children , do they remember the - sign?

Tell them this is 5-4 . The first number says how many balls they need, can they find this many? the next number is how many to squash. Ask the children how many are left over?
encourage the children to say the number sentence with there answer e.g 5-4=1

A number line 1-10 will further support children also. Remind them that it is take away so they will need to jump backwards on their number line.

Rpt for different examples.
